Sri Srimad Gour Govinda Swami Maharaja
Caitanya Upanisad is in Atharva Veda. In Kali-yuga Caitanya Mahaprabhu appears as a disguised incarnation. And His tattva is also a disguised tattva, very, very confidential tattva, hidden tattva because it is disguised. Those who are unfortunate, they cannot understand Caitanya. They speculate so many things about Caitanya Mahaprabhu. They cannot understand that Caitanya Mahaprabhu is the Supreme Personality of Godhead Himself. What to speak of others, even the great scholar, Brhaspati incarnation, Sarvabhauma Bhattacarya was bewildered. He could not understand, as long as he had not been graced by Caitanya Mahaprabhu.
So Narada Muni one of the son's of Lord Brahma, studied many Vedic literatures and underwent very severe penance and austerities. Then one day he came to Brahmaji and asked Brahma for instruction. Brahma said, "You keep up strict brahmacarya, unbroken celibacy and undergo very severe austerity and penance. He did like that. Again he underwent very severe austerity and penance and kept up unbroken celibacy.
Then he came to inquire about the Kali-yuga avatara. "Please tell me something about the incarnation of Kali-yuga, who is known as 'Kali-Yuga Pavana,' Who is the purifier of Kali-yuga. Who is one without second, and the mantra He propagated and the mystery behind it. Please instruct me all about this."
Then Brahmaji spoke the Caitanya Upanisad:
These are mantras from the Caitanya Upanisad:
eko devah sarva-rupi mahatma
caitanyatma sa vai caitanya-saktir
bhaktakaro bhakti-do bhakti-vedyah II 6 II
caitanyaya namo namah II 7 II
vedanta-vedyam purusam puranam
caitanyatmanam visva-yonim mahantam
nanyam panthah vidyate' yanaya II 8 II
The meaning of these verses: Caitanya Mahaprabhu is advaya-jnana-tattva: He is absolute truth. Sarva-deva-maya: all the demigods are there in His body. Audarya-vigraha: wonderful magnanimous incarnation. He is Gaurasundara and He comes in every yuga, yuga-avatar, assuming the complexions of pitir, rakta, syama, sveta: yellow, reddish, blackish and whitish complexions.
In the tenth canto of Srimad-Bhagavatam when Garga Muni came to perform the name giving, purificatory ceremony of Krsna in Vrajabhumi, he said: suklo raktas tatha pita idanim krsnatam gatah. [SB 10.8.13]
asan varnas trayo hy asya
grhnato 'nuyugam tanuh
suklo raktas tatha pita
idanim krsnatam gatah
Your son Krsna appears as an incarnation in every millennium. In the past, He assumed three different colors—white, red and yellow—and now He has appeared in a blackish color. [In another Dvapara-yuga, He appeared (as Lord Ramacandra) in the color of suka, a parrot.] All such incarnations have now assembled in Krsna.] [SB 10.8.13]
He is Supreme Personality of Godhead, Purusottama. He appears in Kali-yuga to teach His own bhakti. Do you understand? He assumes the mood of bhakta, bhakta-bhava. Bhakta-rupa, He also assumes the form of bhakta, not the three places curved Syamasundara-rupa, no, bhakta-rupa [the form of a devotee]. I pay my obeisances again and again to that Sri Krsna Caitanya Who is the absolute truth, paramartha-tattva. Who is known in sarva-veda-vedanta. Who is bhakti-vedyah, Who is known through pure bhakti. I pay my obeisances again and again to that Caitanya Mahaprabhu.
He is puranam-purusam, the oldest person. He has been described in the Vedas and Vedantas, Upanisads. He is directly Krsna, Caitanya. He is the supreme shelter of all the universe. His bodily complexion is molten gold. He is maha-purusa. If someone can understand Him in tattva he can enter into the supreme abode of the Lord and he will be established in his constitutional position. There is no other way beside this, nanyam panthah vidyate' yanaya.
In this Caitanya Upanisad also you will find this Hare Krsna maha-mantra is there. And how by chanting this Hare Krsna maha-mantra one gets the sadhya-vastu, [goal of life] krsna-prema. It is also mentioned there.
Pippalada [Naradaji] then asked: Who is upasya-devata of Kali yuga? The worshippable Deity of Kali-yuga? And what is His bhajan-mantra? Do you understand me? Then Brahmaji said: sa hovacha means Brahma said.
rahasyam te vadisyami: jahnavi-tire navadvipe
golokakhye dhamni govindo dvi-bhujo gaurah sarvatma
maha-purso mahatma maha-yogi tri-gunatitah sattva-rupo
bhaktim-loke kasyatiti tad ete sloka bhavanti II 5 II
This mantra is there. That means, Brahmaji said, "This is very, very confidential tattva, I tell you. He is Gaurasundara, the worshippable Deity of Kali yuga. He is atma-svarupa, He is the Atma of all atmas. He is maha-purusa. He is paramatma-svarupa, He is the Supersoul. He is maha-yogi, great yogi. He is tri-gunatitah, He is beyond the three modes of nature, tri-gunatitah. He is visuddha-sattva-maya, He is established in suddha-sattva. He is the dvi-bhujo Syamasundara, the two-handed Syamasundara but He appears on the banks of the Ganga River in Navadvipa dhama as Gaurasundara and preaches bhakti-yoga-vijnana."
Than another mantra:
sa eva mula-mantram japati harir iti krsna iti rama iti II 11 II
This mantra He utters. Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare, Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare.
It is there in Caitanya Upanisad. Then another mantra:
harati hrdaya-granthim vasana rupam iti harih.
krsih smarane tac ca nastad ubhaya-melanam iti krsnah.
ramayati sarvam iti rama ananda-rupah. atra sloko bhavati. II 12 II
Brahma says: "One who destroys the material desires in the heart of the conditioned soul, which is like a very hard knot, Who breaks that knot, He is Hari."
"Krsna"—this word is formed by 'Krs' plus 'Na.' 'Krs' is the verbal root and 'Na' is pratyaya [verbal form/suffix]. 'Krs' means attraction, all attractive. 'Na' means all pleasing and giving pleasure. Who is all attractive and gives pleasure to one and all, that is 'Krsna.' Hare, Krsna then Rama. And by the uttering of that word or thinking of the name, 'Krsna' one is completely relieved of all material sufferings and distresses and gets transcendental pleasure, joyfulness, and blissfulness, this is 'Krsna.' One who gives pleasure to one and all and is the embodiment of pleasure, ananda, He is Rama. So that is Hare, Krsna, Rama.
mantro guhyah paramo bhakti-vedyah. II 14 II
Then Brahma says: this maha-mantra, Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare, Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare is the essence of all the Vedas. It is the topmost maha-mantra. No other mantra is called maha-mantra. The chief result of chanting this maha-mantra is to get krsna-prema-bhakti. This is the essence of all Veda. Then he says:
namany astav asta ca sobhanani.
tani nityam ye japanti dhiras te vai mayam atitaranti
nanyah paramam mantram parama-rahasyam nityam avartayanti II 14 II
caitanya eva sankarsano vasudevah paramesti rudrah
sakro brhaspatih sarve devah sarvani bhutani
sthavarani carani ca yat kincit sad-asat
karanam sarvam, tad atra slokah II 15 II
Brahma says: "There are eight and eight, sixteen names: Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare, Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare. Sixteen names. These are very sweet, beautiful, transcendental beautiful, sweet names. Those who do this kirtan of this Hare Krsna maha-mantra always, every moment get pure bhakti. Very easily they get out of the trap of maya, otherwise nobody can get out of the trap of maya and get bhakti in Kali-yuga. Those who are nitya-siddha, eternally perfect purusas, they always chant this maha-mantra: Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare, Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare.
In Hari-nama-cintamani, Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura has said:
veda punah bale jata mukta mahajana
para-vyome sada kare nama sankirtana
"Again they say, [the Vedas] 'The great liberated souls in the spiritual world always chant the holy name, performing nama-sankirtana.' [Hari-nama-cintamani, 7.54]
That Caitanya Upanisad has said, that Caitanya is Sankarsana, Vasudeva. From Him comes Brahma, Rudra, Indra, Brhaspati, all the demigods. All the living entities, all animate and inanimate objects, everything comes from Him. He is the emanation of everything. He is the source of all emanations. aham sarvasya prabhavo mattah sarvam pravartate [Bg.10.8] Gita verse.
aham sarvasya prabhavo
mattah sarvam pravartate
iti matva bhajante mam
I am the source of all spiritual and material worlds. Everything emanates from Me. The wise who know this perfectly engage in My devotional service and worship Me with all their hearts. [Bg. 10.8]
He is the sarva-karana-karanam, the cause of all causes. He is the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Another mantra:
ksaraksarabhyam paramah sa eva purusottamah
caitanyakhyam param tattvam sarva-karana-karanam II 18 II
He is Purusottama Who is above this ksara [perishable] and aksara [imperishable], manifest and unmanifest, exhaustible and inexhaustible. He is above that. ksara means exhaustible. aksara means inexhaustible. He is above that. He is sarva-karana-karanam, the cause of all causes. He is parama-tattva, supreme truth. He is Sri Caitanya Deva. Do you follow? Then he says:
ya enam rasayahti bhajati dhyayati sa papmanam tarati sa puto bhavati,
sa tattavam janati, sa tarati sokam, gatis tasyaste nanyasyeti II 19 II
That means one who develops love for Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu, who offers loving service unto Him, who meditates on Him becomes completely free from all sorts of anarthas. All his material ills, lamentations are completely destroyed. He achieves the supreme perfection of life. Those who do not develop love for Sri Krsna Caitanya and do not do bhajan of Sri Krsna Caitanya, they cannot be delivered from this material world. They have no destination at all. Do you understand?
These are some of the mantras from the Sri Caitanya Upanisad.
